American Council on Science and Health

The American Council on Science and Health is a non-profit organization that includes about 350 physicians, scientists, and policy advisors who try to educate the public on numerous issues. The site includes articles on health issues such as food safety, nutrition/lifestyle, and other health-related topics it thinks the public should know more about. The main purpose of the organization is to de-bunk health myths.

American Dietetic Association

The American Dietetic Association is made up of about 69,000 members, 75 percent of whom are registered dieticians. The site has a large variety of information concerning nutrition through areas such as nutrition facts and reading lists that can lead a reporter to excellent sources for stories. It also links to its Journal, where you can create a free account and have access to all journals from past and present.

Food and Drug Administration

The FDA is a major government agency that is responsible for protecting the public health concerning issues to do with food and drugs. It regulates labeling, safety of food products except meat and poultry, and bottled water. It offers links on food and nutrition, and much more.

Nation’s Restaurant News

The NRN is an award-winning publication in food service that presents articles on everything food-related, ranging from food trends and food safety to news on restaurant chains. The up-to-date articles can be helpful in finding stories that could apply to local areas. One of the most helpful things is probably the breaking news on the front page of the site, which lists current food news going on across the country.

National Restaurant Association

The National Restaurant Association has the mission of representing, educating, and promoting the restaurant industry. Over 380,000 restaurants are represented as members. It offers industry research so that reporters can know what kind of sales the industry is expecting to reach in comparison to previous years. The press room section offers news releases with up-to-date information that reporters can follow and use for stories on restaurant trends and any new legislation that may be enacted.

This website is a great place to go to find any restaurant in the Central New York area. Click on Business Directory to find hundreds of restaurants, with addresses and phone numbers. This is a sister site to the monthly newspaper Table Hopping distributed free through CNY.

United States Department of Agriculture

This is a great site related to food and nutrition because within the government agency, there is a section dedicated to those aspects of agriculture. The site includes topics such as food safety and food assistance programs. Another important part of the site that reporters could really use for stories is the food recalls section. This alerts people to current food alerts and recalls, and also has an archive of past food recalls that would be good for research.
